A Guide to Royal Doulton Character Jugs

What Are Royal Doulton Character Jugs?
Royal Doulton Character Jugs are among the most beloved and collectible pieces of British ceramics. First introduced in 1934, these distinctive jugs depict the head and shoulders of famous historical figures, fictional characters, and cultural icons. Unlike Toby Jugs, which show a full-length seated figure, Character Jugs focus purely on the face and upper body, making them instantly recognisable and highly expressive.
A Brief History
The first Royal Doulton Character Jug was 'John Barleycorn', designed by Charles Noke and introduced in 1934. From there, the range grew to include hundreds of different characters — from John Bull and Winston Churchill to Long John Silver and The Mad Hatter. Each jug was carefully crafted and hand-painted at the Royal Doulton factory in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of England's famous Potteries region.
How to Identify a Genuine Royal Doulton Character Jug
Authenticating a Royal Doulton Character Jug is easier than you might think if you know what to look for:
- The backstamp — Genuine pieces will have a Royal Doulton mark on the base, typically featuring a lion sitting atop a crown with the words 'Royal Doulton' and 'Made in England'.
- The model number — Each jug has a unique 'D' number (e.g. D6907 for the Winston Churchill Character Jug of the Year 1992). This can be used to verify the piece against official Royal Doulton records.
- The size — Character Jugs were produced in several sizes: Large, Small, Miniature, and Tiny. The size is often indicated on the base.
- Quality of painting — Genuine pieces have crisp, detailed hand-painting. Be wary of blurry or uneven decoration.
The Most Sought-After Character Jugs
Some Character Jugs are far more valuable than others, particularly limited editions and those that were withdrawn shortly after production. Highly collectible examples include:
- Winston Churchill — produced in various editions, including the Character Jug of the Year series
- The Antagonist Collection — featuring villainous characters
- Double-sided jugs — depicting two characters in one
- Limited edition and 'Character Jug of the Year' pieces — produced in restricted numbers, making them particularly desirable
Caring for Your Character Jugs
To keep your Royal Doulton Character Jugs in the best possible condition:
- Display them away from direct sunlight to prevent fading
- Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth
- Never put them in the dishwasher — hand wash only, with care
- Store carefully if not on display, wrapped in acid-free tissue paper
